This train was so crowded that I almost had to leave with my luggage, but many passengers were getting off so I managed to get on with my large luggage. During rush hour, you can't bring luggage on the JR Osaka Loop Line, but I got off at 16:38 on the outer loop line and arrived at Tennoji at 16:43, where I was able to board the 16:51 Kansai Airport Rapid train.. |

The Kansai Airport Rapid train from Tennoji arrived at Kansai Airport Station at 5:42 PM. Even though it was three hours before departure, check-in was already underway at the check-in counter. This was because many people had problems checking in, which took a long time. The Japanese passenger behind me seemed to be used to it, and said that he had purchased 30 kg of checked baggage, even though his luggage was about the same weight as mine. |

In addition to my ticket, I had also purchased 20kg of checked baggage for \2,000. The total price for the ticket, including meals, was \53,000. While regular airline tickets automatically include one checked bag of about 20kg, budget airlines require you to purchase a baggage allowance, meaning you end up paying \2,000 per kilogram. At this point, I never expected to fall victim to this tactic. |
My checked baggage was 22kg, and I thought it would be fine because previous airlines had accepted it without a word. I was about to find out that this was a low-cost airline. "Your checked baggage is 2.6kg over the limit, and your carry-on baggage is 13.6kg, so it's 6.6kg over, so please check it in. When weighed together, it comes to a total of 16kg of excess checked baggage, so you'll need to pay that," said the Japanese Cebu Pacific attendant. I couldn't believe my ears and thought, "Why am I paying 32,000 yen here?" The carry-on baggage limit is 7kg, so reducing 13.6kg to 7kg means I have to make it half the weight, right? I packed heavy items like my laptop and spare batteries into the knapsack I was carrying, but my carry-on bag with wheels weighed about 5kg, so I would need to take out everything, including a change of underwear, to make it half the weight, and my knapsack wasn't very big, so at this point I was thinking that if they told me how heavy my knapsack was, I would donate it. Thinking back, I realized that in addition to carry-on baggage, handbags and umbrellas can be brought on board, and there are no regulations regarding their weight or size. Furthermore, no one says anything if you are wearing a lot of clothes or have heavy items in your pockets. In fact, there are strict regulations regarding carry-on baggage, with economy class dimensions of 50 x 37 x 25 cm and a weight of 7 kg, and all airlines will tolerate luggage that is more than twice the size, and up to a 25% increase in weight. This time, no one complained about the size, but they were strict about the weight. When I flew with this airline from Mindanao to Cebu on March 16th of this year, I had the same carry-on luggage, but they just said I couldn't bring batteries on board and didn't say anything about the weight. The contents of my luggage were the same, so it should have been the same 13kg. They've only recently made the rules stricter. Low-cost airlines don't make a profit, so they just take money wherever they can? Perhaps it was a request from a wealthy shareholder. This is bullying the weak at best. Cebu Pacific said the carry-on luggage size was 56x23x36cm and less than 7kg. They didn't complain even though my luggage was way over the size and weighed over 7kg, but they may be stricter about size in the future. They might even start asking about the weight of my handbag, so you can't fly with peace of mind on a low-cost airline. I stuffed the contents of my carry-on bag into my knapsack, but all I could do was reduce the weight from 13.6kg to 10kg. At this rate, they wouldn't accept my carry-on baggage, but even if I were to check it in, I put 3kg (6,000 yen) in my handbag to reduce the cost. In my mind, I was thinking about donating it if they told me how heavy my handbag was. In the end, I couldn't exercise my right to have 7kg of my carry-on baggage, so it ended up as checked baggage, and I had no choice but to pay 24,000 yen for the excess 12kg. See the receipt below. However, at this point, my domestic flight had been canceled, but the staff member didn't mention that and simply asked me, "Didn't you receive an email?" When I purchased my ticket, I had written down both Japanese and Philippine contact numbers, but they had contacted the Philippine number to inform me of the flight cancellation. Cebu Pacific knew I would be in Japan before I left, so they contacted the Philippine number, showing they are complete idiots with no intention of doing their job. After this, they continued to be harsh on customers, then run away saying "I'm sorry," in a manner that is clearly indicative of their national character. What's pathetic is that the Japanese staff member was working in the self-centered Filipino style, not putting themselves in the other person's shoes. In the end, my checked baggage was accepted in Osaka with a tag to Manila. I should have booked a replacement flight for my canceled domestic flight, tagged the baggage to my final destination, and gotten a receipt from Osaka to Cebu, but they took the easy way out and ended up arguing with the staff again when I arrived in Manila. Thinking about it calmly later, a number of ideas came to mind. Before checking in, leave your luggage somewhere that cannot be seen from the check-in counter, then check in without it, making sure your weight is within the permitted range, Then walk to immigration, pass the other counters, put your left-down luggage back into your carry-on, and then head for immigration. In other words, weight is only measured at check-in, so all you have to do is make sure your luggage doesn't go over the weight limit at that point. At Kansai Airport, if your luggage is left in an inconspicuous place, it won't be considered suspicious for around an hour, and if you lock it with the lock you always keep in your bag, it won't go missing. Even after finding out that your luggage is overweight at the check-in counter, you can just say, "I'll give the excess baggage to my friend who sent it, and I'll check it in again later," and go and put your luggage somewhere out of sight. However, you'll make a mistake if you don't weigh each piece of baggage while you're at the counter and think about the weight distribution beforehand. I could have avoided paying any extra if I had done this, but it never occurred to me. However, it might be extremely difficult to pack 6.6 kg of luggage into a small bag, and because carry-on baggage is weighed in Manila as well, you'll have to take your luggage out and repeat the process before check-in, which means you'll end up going through a lot of trouble twice. Given this, I was concerned about Cebu Pacific's baggage weight inspections for the rest of the trip. It seems like I could use the same method of placing my luggage away from the counter on the domestic flight to Manila and the international flight back, but even though Manila is inside the airport, there is still a chance of theft due to the country's culture. On the way back from Cebu, I took a domestic flight, but my carry-on baggage was weighed again before the terminal fee collection office after check-in. After that, there was no further weight check until I got on board. In other words, in the Philippines, even after check-in, it is important to keep your carry-on baggage weight below 7kg until you reach the boarding gate. What I was careful about was to carry my handbag as if it were light, no matter how heavy it was, and not drag my carry-on luggage, which is weighed, so if my handbag was over 7kg, they would say "the heavier bag will be treated as carry-on luggage."If they arbitrarily insisted on a condition that was not in the terms and conditions, I would end up paying, so on the way back, my handbag weighed over 7kg, but I carried it lightly. Low-cost airlines are trying every possible way to make money by coming up with new complaints, so in the future they may start making restrictions on the size of carry-on baggage. When that happens, it's a good idea to look up the details of the conditions online and pay 20kg/\2,000 when purchasing your ticket, and keep it on as insurance even if you don't have any checked baggage. When you check in, it's 1kg/\2,000. Even if weight is measured at the boarding gate in the future, duty-free items will probably not be weighed, so will you need to bring your own duty-free bag to put them in? I haven't heard of any cheating methods being used by low-cost airlines in Japan at the moment, but they do have some small differences from previous airlines, such as not being able to move from your assigned seat even after takeoff. When purchasing a ticket, it's important to check the details of the boarding conditions not just once, but periodically. The cheaper mobile phone plans and terms become, the more the conditions, prices, and other factors change every day as companies compete with each other. This is because we live in an age where the fight for survival in business is extremely fierce. Perhaps it's time to be aware that you're dealing with "cheap" plans and keep up to date with the latest details on flights and other things. |

A flight attendant opens the cockpit door - is it really that easy to open it during flight on a low-cost airline? What poor security management - do low-cost airlines really think that hijackings don't happen??? Only one section of the food booth at the front is equipped with an oven, which can heat six containers at a time. Only about 10% of the more than 200 passengers on board had ordered in-flight meals. There is no microwave, so the bento containers are all in aluminum foil. |

| When I bought my ticket, I ordered beef stew from about five different items, but it was actually just cubed beef stir-fried in butter, with no simmered soup whatsoever, and they called it beef stew, which is an absurd imposition, and it was very different from the photo I saw when I bought it online. Even so, I thought they would season it with salt and pepper along with the butter, but it was a bland, amateurish dish made by just butter, more like a child's meal. I knew the juice that came with it tasted like dissolved powder, so I asked to change it for water, but they said I had to buy water for P50 (120 yen). This was the in-flight meal that cost about 800 yen. Compared to the bento lunches at convenience stores, it's clear they're making exorbitant profits. The food was completely unsalted, so I asked the flight attendant if they had any salt or pepper. She said, "I'll go and see if they have any," and then ignored me and continued serving for about half an hour. I chased after her and questioned her, saying, "You said you'd go and see, but are you going to go and see after we get to Manila?" She replied, "I'll go and see now," and in the end all she said was, "Sorry, there's no salt or pepper." It felt like she just went and looked, but didn't actually look for it. They were always sloppy with their work but strict with customers, charging a price for anything they could get a fee for. To make a profit, they'll probably start posting usage fees on the toilets next. Even the small cookies that other airlines give out for free had to be charged for, and San Miguel beer was P100 (220 yen). Meals were charged for, but the only food you could order on board was cup ramen, which you had to purchase in advance. Hot water was free. I only saw Philippine pesos accepted for payment on board, but Japanese yen may also be accepted, although I feel like the exchange rate was extremely poor, and you only got change in pesos. |

The middle seat of the three-seater was empty, and the seat by the window was occupied by a Filipina woman in her 30s who said she was traveling alone in the Kansai region for three nights and four days. She said the pasta she ordered was so bad she could only eat one bite. She told me to try it, so I did, and it was better than my beef stew. Maybe it was because the ketchup and other ingredients had flavor even without seasoning? |

We walked about 1km down a long corridor to the immigration checkpoint. This corridor was really long, going from the southern end to the northern end of Kansai Airport. |
After completing immigration, I collected my checked baggage and went through customs, which was easier than before and the staff didn't even ask for a tip. Normally, they would just accept my baggage as it was for my domestic connecting flight right next to me, so I would be able to check in light and light, but the Japanese staff at Kansai Airport took the easy, Filipino approach, so I ended up carrying my large checked baggage all the way to the check-in counter. After asking around, I found out that the check-in counter was on the third floor, but I finally found a luggage cart and moved from floor to floor, but the cart wouldn't fit on the escalator, so I looked for an elevator. However, although this building is huge, there are not many elevators. People pushing carts line up in a row and wait their turn, which is a first-come, first-served system in this country; on domestic flights where there are few foreigners, there is no orderly waiting in line. The elevators have a small space that can fit two carts and a few people, and although there are two elevators lined up, they cannot keep up with demand at all. The elevator buttons do not have numerical floor indications - 1, 2, 3, 4 - they are all two-letter English abbreviations, not one, two, three. Familiar airport staff would be able to understand without it being written, but to tourists it is a completely meaningless sign, Thinking that if the bottom floor is the basement, I pressed the top button and came out onto the top floor, only to find it was a food court lined with food stalls. I asked where the check-in counter was, but the staff member said, "This is the food floor, go to the check-in floor." I was also told, "So I'm asking what floor this is, but the food floor doesn't tell me what floor it is. What floor is it, one or two below?" I asked several people, but they wouldn't tell me what I wanted to know, just repeating, "To check in, go to the check-in counter floor," "It's on a floor below this," or "This is the food floor." I was carrying a lot of luggage, so I didn't want to make multiple mistakes. I was getting annoyed and saying, "Even I can tell where the food floor is when I see it, just tell me the floor number." Do people in this country never put themselves in other people's shoes? I can't help but think they're missing a brain. Well, at least it's not 100%. It takes a lot of searching and asking around until I find that remaining few percent. I arrive at the check-in floor for departing flights, but there's no reception for domestic flights about four hours later, so I just check the location of the departing flights electronic sign and look for an empty bench. Lots of people are waiting to check in for the first flight, and the airport is packed with people. I finally find an empty bench in the corner of the airport and sit down. After resting for a while, I go back to check the departing flights electronic sign several times, but the next flight never shows up. Two hours before takeoff, and the flight I want to take still doesn't show up, so I go to information and ask where the counter is, and it's already there. Filipino style, it seems the electronic sign and the machines have a soul. I'll just laugh about it. |

After confirming that it was the same weight as at Kansai Airport, they said, "Your luggage is overweight, so you have to pay the excess." |
I said, "I paid for everything in Osaka. They canceled my flight to Cebu without my permission, so it's just a luggage tag to Manila." But they asked me to show them the receipt, so I showed them the receipt in the photo below. I hadn't noticed until now, but the receipt also only went from OSAKA to MANILA. The attendant said, "The receipt also only goes up to Manila..." so the attendant in Osaka should have booked the next flight from the canceled flight to Cebu, but they were just being annoying and only booked it to Manila. Normally, you pay excess fees for the final destination. If you have a problem, call Osaka right now. Otherwise, let the flight that took off an hour ago fly without canceling it. It was you guys who canceled it without my permission. Bring the plane, I'll fly it." He blurted out whatever he could, and said everything he could at 4 a.m. The attendant said, "I'll check," and went off somewhere with the receipt. After a while, the attendant returned and said, "You don't have to pay," and took my checked baggage and issued me my boarding pass. I cursed him in my head, saying, "Of course! He's an idiot who only cares about making passengers go through a lot of trouble and squeezing their money out of them." |

The first flight of the day was cancelled due to lack of equipment, but we were rescheduled for the flight two flights later. |

The plane was flight 5J585, which took off at 4:35am, and we took a bus to the parking lot. |
We arrived at Cebu Mactan Airport at 5:30 AM, just as the sun was rising. We had planned to stay at a hotel for half a night, but they only had family rooms, so we headed straight to the port and took the 8:30 AM Wisam Express high-speed ferry. |

I'm not the one in the toilet. I took a photo before using the toilet, but there was no paper provided for wiping your bottom, so does that mean you have to throw what you use in the trash? Are there buckets and pails available for people who wash with water after using it like me? There is a water tank, but it doesn't seem to be flushable. For a toilet on a Philippine ferry, it was reasonably spacious and clean, and didn't smell bad. The window was half open and couldn't be opened or closed any further. It's typical of the Philippines. |

This time, I brought three long-sleeved items: a thick dress shirt, a hoodie, and a long-sleeved jacket. I layered all three on the ship. The air conditioning breeze hit me wherever I was. |

The 100-ton ship takes about four hours to reach Ormoc, a distance traveled by boat at the speed of a small plane at 200 km/h, which is a pretty fast speed on the ocean. |

Even though it's a tropical island, the town of Ormoc is filled with a Christmas atmosphere in November. Can't wait for Christmas? |

Return to Cebu on the Ocean Jet ferry departing at 10am. |

There were many empty seats on this ferry as well, and we arrived in Cebu city in the afternoon. |

I had to wait until evening in Cebu City to buy a ticket to Mindanao Island,
but I had to go to the port to board. When the taxi arrived at the port,
while the security guard was looking away,
I told the driver, "I said I was going to the ticket office, but
I went to the port first.
The security guard didn't see me, so I told him to go back to the ticket
office. Can I walk 100 meters with all this luggage?"
Finally, at 7:00 PM, I was able to buy a ticket for the TransAsia Ferry, which was departing at 8:00 PM.
This was the few-minute bus ride from the port entrance to the ship
It was dimly lit, but the passengers were all excited and the atmosphere
was cheerful. Perhaps because everyone,
whether they were going home or going, had a purpose, the conversations
were cheerful and happy. It made me feel excited, too.
There were no seats available, so I was standing. A man in his 40s offered
his seat to me.
I sat down without any hesitation, saying, "Oh, thank you very much."
He immediately moved closer to me, so he was able to sit again. It was a happy moment for both of us.
The moment I put my luggage down in my bunk and relaxed,
I suddenly felt hungry. It was a nine-hour boat ride to Cagayan de Oro
on Mindanao Island.
I also started to recognize the names of the dishes on the menu: fried
squid rings called Calamaris (bottom right of photo),
and stir-fried vegetables called Chopsai (P145, ¥320).

Apparently, customers look at the menu, write their order on a piece of paper, and then the food is cooked in the kitchen... so it doesn't seem like they just heat up the pre-made food in the microwave. |

The counter on the right is a shop selling ready-made food and drinks such as sandwiches, and I went to the counter with the neon sign on the left. Everyone was waiting for their food to be served. There was still some time before departure, but I decided to eat early because it might get crowded after this. |

I wonder where the ship next to me is going. The atmosphere is relaxed before departure. This ship is a large ferry weighing several thousand tons, but it is not fast, so they call it a slow boat. |

My meal tonight was chopsai P145 for 320 yen, beer P65 for 150 yen. I bought 8 pieces of cheese in Cebu for about 400 yen. |
Usually, tickets for this ferry are purchased during the day on the day of departure, so even though it's a bunk bed,
it's the bottom bunk, but this time, as it was just before departure,
only the top bunk was available. It was a bit of a climb,
but the air-conditioned tourist class was neither too cold nor too hot,
so I was able to sleep comfortably.
It's been a while since I last saw Rafael, and I'm looking forward to
tomorrow morning.
